The Effect of Spaying in Beef Production

H. J. Gramlich

University of Nebraska

Abstract

Heifers produce the most desirable beef carcasses at from 8 to 15 months of age. If the majority of them could be marketed then there would be but little occasion to even consider spaying.

In a general way, it would seem that spaying does not result in a general benefit to the animals operated upon. The practice probably is of most importance to the ranchman, in so far as it assists him in managing his herd. It does not seem to be of any marked importance to the feeder who fattens cattle.
