Mineral Supplements for Dairy Cows1

J. B. Lindsey and J. G. Archibald

Massachusetts Agricultural Experiment Station

Abstract

The Massachusetts Experiment Station became actively interested in the problem of mineral metabolism in 1921. Interest has centered on the calcium and phosphorus in the ration of the dairy cow, more especially the calcium.

In December of that year a project was organized to ascertain the value of inorganic salts of calcium, especially calcium phosphate, as supplements to the rations of dairy animals. This project is still being carried on. Thirty individuals have been included in it, representing all ages from 6 months to 14 years.

Essentials of the Experiment

The essentials of the experiment have been as follows:

  1. A ration low in calcium but adequate in other respects has been fed to the whole herd.
  2. The herd was divided at the start into two groups as nearly alike as the individuality of the animals would permit, and no change of individuals from one group to another has ever been made.
