I wish to express my deep gratitude to you, my friends, who have been so generous to me tonighttoo generous it seems to me. There is no satisfaction or compensation that ever comes to a man engaged in educational work equal to the friendship, loyalty, and good will of his old students and associates.
Recalls First Educational Work
Many of us can look back to the days of small beginnings in agricultural education. I recall that, in the early nineties, when I went to the Iowa State College as assistant to the late Secretary Wilson, we had just one student who had courage enough to study agriculture. That student is here tonight as he has been at many Internationals. I refer to Dean J. H. Shepperd. I know that you will all agree that we were fortunate in having good material to start with.
