Abstract
Of the 1,573,140 beef steers sold through the Chicago markets in 1924, Iowa feed lots furnished 753,903 or almost 48%. During the past five years Iowa cattle feeders have furnished to public markets for slaughter a total of 9,272,000 cattle of beef or near beef classification. This is an average of 1,855,000 head per year. The actual number has varied from 1,666,000 in 1921 to 2,177,000 in 1924.
Iowa's Beef Extension Problem
Nobody knows very accurately just how many of these cattle were home grown and how many were purchased as stockers and feeders. A common estimate is that from 85 to 90% of the cattle fed for market in Iowa are finished by some other than the man who grew them. When you couple with this situation the idea, which study and experience have changed into a conviction, that most of the money lost by Iowa cattle feeders is lost the day the cattle are bought, our problem in beef cattle extension work is pretty well indicated.
