Illinois College of Agriculture
Abstract
Confidence in the ability of his staff members to do the work they were asked to do and an ability to impress that confidence upon them; fairness and a willingness to get the other man's point of view; an intelligent understanding of the whole field of agriculture, and a sturdy, penetrating common sense and sound judgment with reference to university as well as college policies, coupled with a gracious, charming personality that endeared him to his colleagues throughout the university and State, were characteristics that marked Dr. Eugene Davenport as a dean and director.
Dean Davenport came to Illinois when the State was without a college of agriculture except in name, and although there was a growing sentiment for a properly functioning agricultural college, it remained for him to change aimless sentiment to organized, effective effort and direct it toward a definite objectivethe development of a real agricultural college. Dean Davenport proceeded on the theory that a great agricultural State like Illinois wished to have and ultimately would support a creditable agricultural college.
