Some Factors Affecting the Feed Requirements of Suckling Sows and Litters

Q. W. Wallace, John M. Evvard and C. C. Culbertson

Iowa Agricultural Experiment Station

Abstract

A study of the experimental records of suckling sows and litters indicates that there are numerous factors affecting the gains and feed requirements. It has been our experience that the feed requirements of suckling sows and litters vary to a considerable extent even when the sows are fed and handled similarly. It is of primary importance to know what these factors are, and how they affect the results of suckling experiments.

Resumé of Important Factors

Probably the first factor of importance is the ability of the sows to farrow as well as suckle litters of good average size. The character of the litters will also be affected by the boar used. The tried purebred sire is, of course, to be recommended.

The size of litters, or in other words, the number of pigs per litter, as will be shown later, has a marked effect on the feed requirements per unit of gains made.
