Abstract
Conclusions: We feel that our data show beyond a doubt that when velvet beans constitute any considerable part of the ration for brood sows, they have a deleterious influence on the size and vitality of the pigs farrowed and on the milk production of the sows. Moreover, the results indicate that this influence is due to the presence of an injurious substance. The effect of this subtsance tends to obscure any response that might otherwise be made when the nutritive deficiencies of the bean are remedied, if such deficiencies exist.
It may be possible to allow sows the run of velvet bean fields for as much as 50 to 60 days immediately after breeding, or to feed the ground shelled beans up to 25 per cent of a complete ration.
We feel sure that the use of much larger amounts of raw velvet beans in the ration for brood sows will be followed by very unsatisfactory results.
