Abstract
The meat ring as operated in Iowa is organized for the purpose of supplying the farm family with a regular supply of fresh meat of good quality and at a reasonable price. It is usually made up of 30 to 35 families and operates about 20 weeks during the summer months, generally beginning the latter part of May.
Organization of the Ring
Only one meeting of the members at the beginning of each season is necessary. At this time a name is selected for the club, officers, including the butcher, elected and their duties outlined. Agreement is made as to the frequency of slaughtering, which is usually once a week. The general quality and age limit of the animals is decided upon and every member agrees to furnish a beef of the specified quality when his turn comes. These people have realized the superiority of good beef breeding and usually stipulate that the animal furnished must not be over two years of age and must be of good beef conformation.
