Abstract
Upon first consideration of the topic I could not help but wonder, Why such a question? for surely the horse specialist's field exists as does any other extension man's. However, on second thought, realizing that there are so few individuals catalogued as "Horse Specialists," the question seems more reasonable. It seems to imply that we first justify our existence, since the existence of any office or department is warranted only when there is a real need for such. Speaking of our own particular field, namely, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, permit me to mention a few conditions as we find them in that State.
Conditions in Pennsylvania
In the first place approximately 10,000 head of horses are annually imported for replacement purposes, a large proportion of which go onto farms. What does this mean? It simply means that we are not raising enough horses to supply the needs on the farm, to say nothing of the commercial needs.
