Alfalfa Hay As a Basis for Home-Grown Rations for Milk Production

F. B. Morrison, R. S. Hulce and G. C. Humphrey

Wisconsin Agricultural Experiment Station

Abstract

Conclusions: The results of the trials here reported indicate that fall-freshening cows will maintain normal flows of milk during the winter-feeding period on a home-grown ration, providing alfalfa hay is fed liberally to maintain the nitrogen supply. Such a ration is more economical than a similar ration with protein-rich supplements added.

The authors do not believe that the feeds in the home-grown rations used supply sufficient protein for cows forced for high records, as in the case of cows being run for advanced registry records.
