Study of Rice and Rice By-Products for Fattening Swine

E. H. Hughes

University of California

Abstract

During the year 1921 the State of California ranked third in the quantity and value of rice products. Inasmuch as many inquiries were received concerning the feeding value of rice and rice by-products for swine, and because there was very little reliable information on hand concerning the feeding value of these feeds, 3 tests were conducted during the last year at the California Experiment Station to determine the feeding value of these feeds for fattening swine when self-fed in dry lot. The results of the first two tests are here reported. The second trial was a duplicate of the first in so far as rations fed, methods of feeding, and marketing were concerned. Eight lots of 10 pigs in each lot were included in each trial. One lot received barley and tankage as a check lot; the remaining 7 lots received rice and rice by-products in combination with barley and tankage.
