The Ratio of Head Length to the Dimension of Certain Other Parts in Holstein-Friesian Cattle

B. E. Pontius

Purdue University

Abstract

In this study the length of head is taken as the unit. The assumption has been made that a cow having an ideal form would show a definite ratio between the length of head; length of body; length of pelvis; length of pin-bones to stifle, and length from stifle to hock; height at withers; height at sternum and height and hock; width of shoulders; width at hips; and depth of chest. The assumed ratios are as follows:

  1. Length of body = 31/4 times length of head.
  2. Length of pelvis = 1 times length of head.
  3. Length from pin-bones to stifle = 1 times length of head.
  4. Length of stifle to hoek = 1 times length of head.
  5. Width of shoulders = 1 times length of head.
  6. Width of hips = 1 times length of head.
  7. Height at sternum = 1 times length of head.
  8. Height at hoek = 1 times length of head.
  9. Height at withers = 21/4 times length of head.
  10. Depth of chest = 11/2 times length of head.
