Hog Production Record Demonstrations in Indiana

James R. Wiley

Purdue University

Abstract

What is the scope or purpose of this work? How is the work conducted? What results have been secured? These are the three questions that immediately arise about the hog production record demonstrations.

An analysis of the problems of swine extension answers the first question. Economical production and marketing are the two broad problems the farmer has to solve to be able to continue profitably in the hog business. His marketing problems do not enter into this discussion. His production problems naturally fall into three divisions, breeding, feeding and management.

Pig clubs; local, district, state and national shows; tours by breeders in a community to other breeders' farms; and purebred sire campaigns are the various activities that are directed toward solving the problem of breeding in Indiana. Such activities and the economic force of market demand have resulted in a high standard of breeding.
