Abstract
The object of this communication is to call attention to a fact not generally known to animal husbandmen, that the amount of flesh (non-fatty tissue) gained per unit time by an animal at different ages of its growth period, varies in cyclic or periodic manner. This idea will be clearly understood by inspection of figures 1 and 2* which show the gain in weight per month at different ages by Holstein and Jersey cows. Figure 3 shows the gain in weight per week at different ages by the Rhode Island Red fowl.
The monthly gain is seen to increase in the cow from birth up to 5 months of age when the gain is the most rapid during the life of the animal. From this age the gain declines to the age of 15 months. This is followed by a second and last cycle with a maximum gain at about 20 months of age.
