President's Address Nutritional Factors in Swine Feeding

F. B. Morrison*

Wisconsin Agricultural Experiment Station

Abstract

During the past few years entirely new fields of investigation have been opened up to the biological chemist and the animal husbandman as well, thru the recent epoch-making discoveries in animal nutrition. Of profound importance is the finding that the quality of the proteins consumed by man and beast is fully as important from the standpoint of successful nutrition, as the amount of protein in the food. Not less far reaching in practical applications are the investigations which have thrown new light on the mineral requirements of farm animals. Perhaps the most spectacular of all are the discoveries of the three vitamines thus far known, and the proof of their functions in nutrition.

As yet there is but little data available to show to what extent or in what manner the present practices of successful stock feeding may be improved by the application of this newer knowledge.
