Effects of Pig Growth Hormone on Pigs1

B. Henricson2 and S. Ullberg3

Royal Veterinary College, Stockholm, Sweden

Abstract

Between 24 and 132 days of age, pigs were given daily doses of GH prepared from pig pituitaries by the method of Li and Papkoff (1956). The doses were 0.1, 0.2, and 0.05 mg./kg. body weight. Effects of this treatment upon growth, feed consumption, and certain blood values have been followed. Both female pigs and castrated males were given GH. The females had a significantly greater increase in weight. No differences in feed consumption between the groups could be detected; this may depend upon consumption not being measured separately for the females and males. The administration of GH had no apparent effect upon the blood glucose or blood phosphorus levels.
