A Comparison of Embryo Survival in Gilts Slaughtered Twenty-Five Versus Forty Days After Breeding

J. W. Gossett1 and A. M. Sorensen, Jr.

Texas Agricultural Experiment Station, College Station2

Abstract

Data were collected from 85 gilts to evaluate the difference in intrauterine mortality at 25 and 40 day stages of pregnancy.

Under the conditions of these studies it appears preferable to slaughter gilts at 40 days of gestation to obtain an estimate of intra-uterine mortality. An additional 5 percentage points of mortality were found in the additional 15 days of pregnancy.
