Abstract
I have asked for and received permission to discuss the contributions made by livestock shows, and the judging done at these shows, in the improvement and change in livestock type and conformation during the past 50 years.
In order that we may have some basis on which to consider the changes that have taken place during the past half century, I think it is well that we take a very brief look at the early development of our purebred breeds of meat animals and horses.
Development of Breeds. Let's look at the early history of the beef breeds, some of the mutton sheep and several of the hog breeds as they developed in Great Britain. We find that exhibits, shows and competitions played a real and vital part in the development of each of these breeds. During those formative years the breeding of livestock was largely an art; however, the master breeders paid more attention to utility, efficiency of production, and placed more emphasis on the qualities that produced meat which would suit the consumer, than did the average livestock producer of that time.
