Diurnal Variations in the Composition of Swine Feces1

Abstract

Evidence has been presented to substantiate the nature of the diurnal variation in fecal Cr2O3 values reported for self-fed pigs by Clawson et al. (1955).

Cr2O3 concentration was greater in the morning than evening and was associated with greater concentrations of nitrogen and ash. Non-nitrogenous organic matter was present in greater concentration in the afternoon or evening samples than in those obtained in the morning.

Possible reasons for the diurnal variation in fecal composition are considered to be the differences in time of digestion in the lower tract and/or differences in rate of passage of various feed fractions through the stomach.
