The Influence of Oral Administration of Diethylstilbestrol upon Estrogenic Residues in the Tissues of Beef Cattle

Rodney Preston, Edmund Cheng, C. D. Story, Paul Homeyer, John Pauls and Wise Burroughs

Iowa Agricultural Experiment Station1

Abstract

Examination of tissues removed from cattle fed diethylstilbestrol in four experiments revealed no detectable estrogenic residues in the lean, fat, liver, heart and kidney tissues as well as the pooled offal organs which-included tripe, intestines, lungs and spleen. Estrogenic residues were checked using two mouse-uterine weight assay techniques. The average sensitivity of both methods was such that if as little as 2 mcg. of stilbestrol per kg. of tissue had been present it would have been detected.
