Effect of Stilbestrol on Ration Digestibility and on Calcium, Phosphorus and Nitrogen Retention in Lambs

Oklahoma Agricultural Experiment Station,3

Abstract

Digestion trials which included calcium, phosphorus, and nitrogen balances were conducted with two groups of feeder lambs. One group was treated with 24 mg. of stilbestrol implanted in the neck region. The treatment had no apparent effect on the digestibility of major nutrients of the ration other than a slight increase in the digestibility of the crude fiber. There was a marked increase in the retention of calcium, phosphorus and nitrogen in the stilbestrol-treated lambs. Also, the stilbestrol-treated lambs gained weight at a considerably faster rate than the untreated lambs.
