For Economically Important Characters in Swine1

C. F. Sierk2 and L. M. Winters

University of Minnesota

Abstract

A symposium is by definition the expression and discussion of ideas and opinions. It is very likely that these ideas and opinions will have been formulated under diverse conditions. Consequently, it seems only fitting and proper to outline briefly the particular conditions which have existed and which serve as a basis for the thoughts to be expressed.

The development of the lines of swine which have supplied the data from which I will make some rather broad, general statements as to the effectiveness of selection should be reviewed briefly. This information has appeared in publications but there is ample justification for reviewing it at this time, because the procedures which have been followed may be largely responsible for the results obtained.

There are at the present time, in the Minnesota project, five inbred lines of Poland China swine. Two of these lines have been maintained without the introduction of outside breeding, two of the lines have been developed by combining three inbred lines and the fifth line rests on a foundation of six inbred lines.
