Abstract
It appears that length of staple and percentage of clean wool on the weanling may be used for predicting these characters in the yearling fleece. These characters give the most reliable results.
Fineness and density show some predictive value but in this study this value appears limited. It is pointed out that fineness determinations for side and thigh wool samples should be considered individually.
For practical purposes one sample was found to be as good as two for estimating percentage clean yield, density index and staple length. However, in the Columbias the reliability of predicting yearling fleece length from weanling fleece length is materially increased by measuring four samples instead of two.
